The Movable Feast is an annual multidisciplinary presenting series of
innovative modern performing and performance events shown in
multiple venues across the city.
Reid Farrington’s The Passion Project is an electrifying work that
compresses the Carl Dreyer’s classic silent film The Passion of Joan
of Arc into a 40 minute concentration of movement, projection,
installation and sound collage. The audience surrounds a 10
X 10 foot area, flooded by four projectors, in which the dancer
meticulously arranges and rearranges a number of parchment
screens in a series of choreographed movements that explode the
film into three dimensions.
The history of the 1928 film is almost as mythic as its subject matter. After the original negative was destroyed in a fire, the film was reconstructred using alternate takes. Miraculously, over five
decades, a complete print of the original cut was found. New York
based video artist Reid Farrington, formely of the Wooster Group,
uses recorded interviews and sound clips alongside different
takes of the movie in an archival film experiment that explores the
fascinating history of this cinematic masterpiece.
The Passion Project has toured nationally and internationally and was
last performed in Budapest.
“What beauty there is in Mr. Farrington’s work. Like Dreyer’s film, it is both luminous and cruel.” — The New York Times
“It was magical, and sinister, and strange — one of the most satisfying theatrical experiences I’ve had in ages. We are seduced by the grandeur of the original even as Farrington shatters it.” — WNYC Culturists blog
“The Passion Project should not be watched, it should be entered into. After all, it is an act of devotion.” — Time Out New York
The Passion Project presented in partnership with University of Regina Theatre Departments 2011/2012 Centennial Celebration
